The Carrier adaptive fan option is a new method of controlling the supply fan in a constant volume rooftop unit. This control method employs a variable frequency drive (VFD) to operate the supply fan at different speeds in order to achieve energy savings through reduced fan power. This method is not focused on modulation of the compressor or heating section, nor with controlling static pressure in the supply duct, but rather with setting fan speed for different operating conditions, such as ventilation mode or part-load mechanical cooling.
The Carrier adaptive fan variable range is based on the unit's normal operating range, with the 100 percent fan speed value corresponding to the conventional rooftop unit design range for the constant volume unit. Typically, this is the adjustable unit range of 300-500 cfm/nominal ton. The VFD will control the fan speed to operate at one of eight different specific fan speeds, depending upon the operating condition of the unit. The individual operating speeds are adjustable through the rooftop units ComfortLINK™ controls.
